Patio Roofing - Your Best Option

If you're looking for patio roofing options, you've come to the right place.

First off, if you're at the design stage of the project, you are best served by putting the patio under the main roof of your home. Typically, that would have a sloped roofing system such as asphalt shingles. This strategy eliminates low-sloped roofing products entirely, along with their high cost and relatively short life.

If you are adding a patio, avoid the type of lightweight metal roof panels that are typically attached to manufactured homes for carports and such. Not only are these products vulnerable in high winds, they won't withstand foot traffic. And if you can't walk on it, you can't service it when needed.

But there is a structural metal panel that words pretty good for patio roofing. It is a composite of polyurethane foam that is sandwiched between two layers of aluminum. The foam provides insulation and the panels can withstand some foot traffic. To be safe, I walk on plywood when working on this type of roof to distribute my weight.

Moving onto a more conventional option for your patio roofing, the most important thing to remember is that you need to have positive drainage. This can be accomplished with a slope that is as low as 1/4" per foot. If you don't have it in the structure, install a tapered system between the roof deck and the roofing. Almost any low sloped roofing system can succeed with proper drainage. Virtually none will succeed without it.

For over a hundred years, the traditional choice for low-sloped roofing has been a built-up roof (BUR) with gravel surfacing. The multiple layers of felt, each set in a layer of hot asphalt make for a thick, heavy-duty roof system that is tough to beat. But this type of roofing is on the decline due to the hazards associated with hot asphalt. Insurance companies are demanding outrageous deductibles for hot tar accidents, which is cooling the market for BUR, especially on small residential jobs.

A popular alternative for patio roofing is torch-applied modified bitumen, or just "modified" as it is commonly called. It is a rolled roofing product that is specially formulated to accommodate temperature changes. Unfortunately, the torch application can easily start a house fire... and often does.

There is a family of plastic and rubber roofing products called "single-ply" that can be installed without torch or kettle hazards. But the inherent problem with single-ply roofing is just as the name implies: There is just one layer of waterproof protection. Something as simple as a dropped tool or a discarded cigarette butt can cause a leak. And if there is any ponding at all, the seams must be PERFECT to prevent water intrusion. Perfection is a lot to expect from anybody, including us roofers.

Fortunately, there is an excellent option for your patio roofing. It's a hybrid that combines the best features of two different systems. It starts with a nailed down base sheet over a tapered roof deck. Then a smooth-surfaced, self-adhering mid-ply of modified bitumen is installed. Finally a self-adhering modified cap sheet with white granular surfacing is installed.

This system gives you the back-up protection of a built-up roof and the flexibility of modified, without the dangers of torches and kettles.

Home Improvements - Getting Them Done on a Budget

If you are a typical homeowner, you have probably thought about remodeling. If you are getting ready to sell, it might be a good idea to do a bit of updating, and improve the value. You have to be sensible, though, so of course you will want to get the upgrades done for the lowest amount. Not spending too much is an important consideration, but that does not mean you want a cheap result.

Real estate is a serious undertaking, and if you don't do things right, you could over-invest. This is just as true for a remodel of just a single room as it is for a renovation of the complete property and everything on it. For most of us, hiring a professional contractor is a necessary part of getting the job done. The criticality of choosing the right service firm for the job cannot be emphasized too much.

According to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), homeowners should be aware of the scams of bogus firms. The FTC has published warnings about these red flags that your contractor might be trouble:

* Insists on a quick decision
* Wants full payment up front
* Offers you a cheaper price for finding other customers
* Accepts only cash payments
* Has to ask you to obtain the necessary city permits
* Offers you a discount due to having extra material for some random reason

Those are some of the warnings that you should walk away from the deal. Sometimes a bogus contractor will try to get you to borrow from a company that they suggest. The worst case scenario of a home improvement loan scam could leave you out in the cold.

There are several things you can do to keep from being taken. Interview your prospective contractors carefully. The FTC recommends that you ask about the length of time they have been doing business, their license details, and insurance coverage. Check with your city building office. To put it simply, ask around. These steps are not unlike the normal steps you take for any significant purchase.

Another important technique is asking for recent references. Not only should you collect a list of former customers, but you should call and checkup on them. Ask these references about the quality of the work and service.

Ensure that your payment terms are clear and agreed upon before they start. Some local laws do set limits on how much higher the actual cost of a project is allowed to be above the estimate. Check into the laws in your area. In any event, don't pay until you are satisfied with the work.

Asphalt Shingle Roofing - The Facts

Is it any wonder why almost 80% of homes in North America use asphalt shingles as the roofing material of choice. The prevalence of asphalt shingles has created a vast assortment of fittings and fixtures designed to work with them. Items such as a multitude of flashing configurations, edge products, and almost every skylight manufactured has an appropriate base configuration for a weatherproof connection with asphalt shingles. All of the material that you need for a proper installation, such as the shingles, tarpaper, nails, vent boots and chimney flashing are available at any home improvement retailer.

The primary attributes of asphalt tiles are:

  • reasonably priced (economical),
  • require very little maintenance,
  • versatile,
  • provide excellent protection on steep sloped roofs,
  • are weather and sunlight resistant,
  • easy to cut,
  • can be nailed by hand or with powered nailers.

There are two different types of asphalt shingle base material construction - composition and fiberglass. Composition shingles use a base material termed organic felt, which is a blend of paper and wood fibers. Fiberglass, on the other hand, uses a base that is comprised of a fiberglass mat. In both cases, once the base material is produced it is soaked in an asphalt compound. In numbers sold, fiberglass leads the market. They are less expensive, weigh less because they are thinner, have a longer wear life and have a better fire rating than the composition base shingles.

Average cost of a shingle roof is $50 to $150 per square, installed. Removal of old shingles will cost between $30 and $50 per square.

Both types of asphalt shingles are manufactured with embedded mineral granules. Seeing the granules in your eaves trough (after the initial installation) is a sure sign that you need to repair or replace the shingles.

Where just a few years ago asphalt shingles were only available in simple tab configurations in blacks, grays and browns, the manufacturers have expanded their product lines to include a vast array of colors, profiles and with the use of laminate coatings have created as assortment of eye pleasing textures. Special chemicals are also being blended into the shingles to make them mold and algae resistant. Although these additional features do increase the price per square, asphalt shingles are still the most economical roofing material available.

Drawbacks:

The serviceable life of asphalt shingles is the lowest of all the roofing materials. Although they are available in numerous grades designated by the expected life, from 15 to 50 years they often need repair or replacement long before their supposed life has expired. The hotter the climate, the shorter the life of asphalt shingles. Many of the asphalt shingle problems that are encountered by homeowners are a direct result of two factors:

  • poor initial installation
  • damage due to sever weather

Poor installation usually occurs in the area of deck preparation, and not providing adequate flashing around items that are protruding through the roof such as vent pipes and chimneys. Other poor installation methods are not using the required amount of nails per shingle and nailing in the wrong area of the shingle. There are many fly-by-night roofing companies that will quote low prices, because they won't be around to stand behind the workmanship. Choose a roofing contractor carefully.

Roof Repairs:

You should inspect your shingled roof and all the flashing at least once a year and after any major storm such as a hurricane. Hurricane winds will remove entire shingles and lift others. Sun and rain can cause asphalt shingles to crack. You should also go into the attic and look up, any sign of daylight means that there is a hole. When inspecting the roof look for shingles that have lost the granule minerals - bald spots, cracked and/or curled.

If you have to make a roof repair, choose a warm day so that the shingles will be flexible and unlikely to crack when lifted. The roofing cements also spread easier in warmer temperatures.

You will know when you have a roofing problem when you see beige spots appearing on ceilings and walls close to the ceiling. Beige spots are a sign of water damage.

Maintenance:

Roofing cement is the equivalent of duct tape for roofs. It will repair most leaks, cracked or torn shingles, patch flashing around vent pipes and chimneys. You can also use the roofing cement to cover nail heads that have been exposed.

Shingles fade with age so any replacement shingles used will most likely be visually obvious. Shingle over damaged ridge shingles, by nailing down all the corners of the old shingle first - do not remove them.

If you have to replace an entire shingle, lift each of the tabs and pry the nails out of the shingle of the one that needs to be replaced. Remove the top corners of the replacement shingle and very carefully, without damaging the tarpaper, slip it under the existing shingles.

Use roofing nails (large head, galvanized) to fix the new shingle to the roof decking. Use roofing cement to cover the nail heads.

Planning and knowledge are the keys to any successful home improvement, remodel or landscaping project!

Durable Metal Roofs - Many Affordable and Long Lasting Options For Metal Roofing Materials

Metal roofing in today is the perfect alternative to traditional roofing materials. In fact the new metal roofing materials serve as one of the best answers to the need of fire-resistant, lightweight and durable roofing that looks smart on your house. Metal roofs are favored by many home owners because they last for a long time and in addition offer many added advantages. Metal roofs are extremely cost effective and also very energy efficient.

Metal roofs come with a life expectancy of at least 30 years if not more, so if you plan to live in your house for a long time, your best option will be to go for durable metal roofing materials. Not only is metal roofing a good investment, it can also get you a discount on the homeowner's (fire) insurance.

The price of metal roofing materials may vary; it may start at $100 per square and go up to $600 per square depending on the material. Although the installation cost may be more than regular shingle roofs the re-roofing costs are very much the same. One major benefit of installing metal roofing materials is the fact that there is no need to tear-off old shingles; the new material can easily be applied over old layers of shingles.

There are some popular metal roofing materials which are commonly used like steel, aluminum, alloys etc. In this article we provide a brief look at the common choices to help you decide which option would be better for your home:

Steel: It is heavier than aluminum. For people who enjoy the look of slate or tile, lighter steel can present a similar look while being supported by your roof structure. Steel is also much sturdier than aluminum. In order to prevent corrosion or rust, many manufacturers make use of coating to protect the material.

Aluminum: Aluminum roof is a popular choice as it does not rust and also helps to reduce the sound of rain. Although you may feel the need to paint or coat it in order to enhance its appearance. This material is very lightweight and hence it is commonly used for residential metal roofing purposes.

Copper: It does not rust like aluminum and is soft which makes it easy to tool. The only drawback of this material is the fact that it is quite expensive and not everybody can afford to install this metal roofing material.

Stainless steel: This is a very expensive material. It will not rust or corrode. Also Terne coating helps to give it a natural matte gray finish which looks exquisite.

Alloys: Alloys guarantee durability and strength. In addition to that, you shall also find that they have the ability to weather gracefully which adds to the beauty of your home.

The above are the metal roofing materials that you can opt for. Although you might feel the need to hire professionals to install these, do not think twice about purchasing metal roofing as the benefits it offers are more than worth each penny you spend.

Now that you have a good idea about different metal roofing materials, go ahead and choose the best suited option for your home to give it an exquisite appeal and modern look for decades to come.

Roof Repair - Why Repair Your Roof After a Long Winter?

Every winter, your roof gets bombarded with wind, snow, ice and continual thaw-freeze conditions. This can result in severe and often hidden damage to the roof. Your roof can then leak during spring months when the heavy rains begin. Without a roof repair check-up and required repairs to your roof, a flood of water can cause thousands in damages - damages that could have easily been prevented.

Older roofs are especially vulnerable. Why? Because the shingles are already broken down from years of abuse from Mother Nature, and even if your roof has 5 or 10 more years of warranty life ahead, repairs to your roof are sometimes a must to get the most from your roof. Roof repairs are often mandatory.

Some of the areas your roof may require repairs are the loose or missing shingle that were damaged from hard winter winds. Shingles are extremely brittle in cold temperatures, and hard driven cold winds can easily break shingles. Flashing repairs are also important to repair because exposed nails and sealants such as caulking often dry out and fall apart. This creates open gaps for water to easily cause an enormous leak. The worst danger areas are around chimneys, skylights, and anywhere shingles butt up against a wall. These are all very crucial roof repair areas during the new raining spring months.

Most spring roof repairs, check ups (or tune ups) cost from $200-$500. $400 is a good price. It is always a good idea to hire a respectable roof repair company that can supply good repair references. Always check these repair references and make damn sure they are recent. A good roofing repair company will also deduct the cost of the roof check up from any additional roof repair costs. For example, if your roof requires $1500 of repair, the cost of the initial roof check-up will be deducted. Be sure to ask ahead of time to be sure this deductible is a part of the roof repair process.

Always be sure that a roofing company performing the roof repair check up looks in your home's attic. The underside of your roof deck tells a huge, accurate story of everything that is happening on your roof. Stains, rust where the nails are poking through the wood roof deck, water marks on the insulation, wet insulation, everything shows in the attic. Repairs are accurate using this method.

Your eave troughs also play an important role in any good spring roof repair tune up. Water can collect in the eaves due to plugged drainage. When water freezes it expands and bends eave troughs out of shape and out of position. Ice dams can also form playing real havoc to wood and shingles. A good roof repair tune up will check for and solve the damage before it is too late.

Spring is here. Now is the time to do repair to your roof. Roof repairs during the early months of spring after a hard blistery winter can literally save you thousands of dollars of damage and can keep your roof in tip top shape.

What Does A Gfi Do

Why Every Home Needs a Faucet Water Filter

You might disagree, but here me out on this. Every home needs a faucet water filter. There are so many contaminants in our drinking water that our health is being threatened every day when we turn on our faucets and drink unfiltered water.

USA Today reports in How Safe Is Your Water? "Each day, millions of Americans turn on their taps and get water that exceeds the legal limits for dangerous contaminants." And that report is only talking about the 85 contaminants that the federal government has set limits on. There are thousands other contaminants in our water that don't even have a limit set on them.

Faucet water filters will filter out these thousands of dangerous contaminants. If you are thinking that you mainly drink bottled water so you are safe, then you might want to take a look at bottled water.

First, let's look at the cost of bottled water, versus the cost of water from a kitchen faucet water filter. Let's say you buy the store brand of bottled water when it is on special. The least expensive I've found cost about 20 cents for a 20-ounce bottle, when you buy 24 bottles at a time. That makes a gallon of bottled water $1.28 cents per gallon. And if you buy it by the gallon, I've seen it as low as 49 cents a gallon.

That sounds like a pretty good price, but if you compare that to the water that comes out of kitchen faucet water filters, you would only have 9 cents per gallon. So the cost alone would be good enough reason to invest in a faucet water filter.

Second, let's look at the quality of the water. There are no government standards that require bottled water to be any better, purer or safer than tap water. You might want to think that the water in those bottles come from some pristine mountain, where the water is absolutely pure, but that is not the case.

I think we can agree that we would want our bottled water to be safer than tap water, but we have no guarantee that it is. If you're not convinced yet, read and think about the following statement by Jacquelyn Warren from the National Resources Defense Council. "The one thing we know for sure about toxins in our drinking water, is that the more we look, the more we find."

After reading that, you should agree with me that you want your water safer than tap water. So I think it is safe to say that bottled water is not the quality you are looking for.

When you look at water that has been through a faucet water filter, if you shop correctly you can be assured that the water you are drinking is safe and free from all contaminants. What I mean by shopping correctly is to look for certain things when you are looking at faucet water filters.

What you need to look for is a faucet water filter that uses more than one media or technology to filter out all contaminants. The different types that you need are a granulated carbon filter, a sub micron filter, and a multi block filter, and an ion exchange.

These filters combined will remove all dangerous chemicals and contaminants out of your drinking water, so you will be sure to have safe healthy water to drink. Don't settle for a filter that just uses one type of media to remove all contaminants. It just won't work.

If you are not sure what the faucet water filters you are considering to purchase remove from your water, ask to see the Performance Data Sheet. If you are buying online a reputable dealer should have that available for you to download and read before you buy.

If you disagreed with me in the beginning of this article, hopefully I've been clear enough and you now agree that every house needs a faucet water filter.

Asphalt Roofing Shingles - Popular, Affordable and Easy To Install

People often think of dream homes as those neat, crisp-looking houses with brick walls and triangular roofs. Such is a classic picture of what people imagine homes should be like. And this effect can be achieved with a home roofed with asphalt roofing shingles.

Asphalt shingles have become quite so popular when it comes to roofing options for homes. Their versatility and economic value have proven to be so attractive that they now cover as much as 80 percent of the market. Asphalt shingles are quite inexpensive and easy to install. They come in a great array of quality and style and are compatible with a wide range of roof pitches. They can be installed with different roof features, from roof edges to chimneys and wall terminations to vent flashings. Most of all, they are highly attractive and can really give a house that homey effect.

There are basically two types of asphalt shingles available in the market: the organic-mat shingles and the fiberglass shingles. Both of these are of course made of asphalt, but the difference lies on the reinforcing mat - the fiberglass variety of uses fiberglass while the organic variety uses a wood-derived mat made of cellulose fiber.

The organic type of mat requires two coatings of asphalt - a soft asphalt for saturation and then harder asphalt for protection. Meanwhile, the fiberglass type only needs one hard asphalt coating. People choose fiberglass for its light weight, thinness, ease of transporting and high fire rating.

There are those who still prefer the organic type because they are more durable and they are more flexible especially during cold weather. As such, fiberglass shingles are more popular in the central and southern parts of the country while organic shingles predominate the market in the northern parts as well as in Canada.

Buying Considerations

One of the major considerations when buying asphalt shingles is its service life. Warranties for asphalt shingles usually come as longs as 20 to 45 years. However, it is important to choose a particular brand not only for its warranty period as they do not really reflect the actual lifespan of shingles. There have been reports of asphalt shingles failing far earlier than the expiry date of their warranties, and a lot of homeowners have complained that the payouts did not really cover the replacement or repair costs as they should.

But this does not mean that one should completely shun asphalt shingles as a roofing choice with the right mindset in buying, you can still get quality shingles that last long.

When buying asphalt shingles what you need to look at is how much a particular brand meets industry standards, instead of the warranties. For fiberglass shingles, you should make sure that the product meets the standard known as ASTM D-3462, which means that the shingles can withstand tests such as nail withdrawal and tear-strength. In the past decade only a few products have passed this standards and you need to make sure that the one you buy are up to this standard. Shingles are inspected by Underwriters Laboratory and those who pass come with the UL logo and a certification.

Organic mat shingles, on the other hand, should meet the standard called ASTM D-225. Organic shingles usually have greater nail-pull and tear strength resistance compared to asphalt shingles and thus their standards are also higher. A good lose rule of thumb is that heavier organic shingles are sturdier than lighter ones. This may not always be true for fiberglass shingles, though.

As expected, shingles that fulfill the industry standards are more expensive than shingles of low quality. But aside from the quality of the shingles themselves, there is also the factor of installation when the roofing cost is being considered. You may opt to use cheaper nails, but it may be rather wasteful to install good quality shingles using low-grade nails.

Different Looks

What people usually consider when they want asphalt shingles is their appearance. Shingles comes in different styles and colors that can really bring out the beauty of a home. With the right kind of asphalt shingle you can achieve different looks for your dream home.

Asphalt roofing shingles are the roofing materials of choice for many homes and even commercial buildings. With its superb form and function there is no wonder why this has become quite popular when building dream houses.

Whirlpool Dryer Parts

Hello friend I see you must be looking for Whirlpool Dryer Parts. Well maybe this article you are now reading could help you? The first thing you must have to know is what exactly is the problem of your appliance machine. Is it not heating, tumbling or taking to long to dry. There is many different parts that could be bad or in need of repair.

Now before you is a list of different kind of dryer parts and the process of how they work or what problem they could cost your dryer from working in good condition.

Dryer Timer Parts: They have many different part numbers for specific dryer models. The dryer timer is exactly what the name says it calls for your electricity to run the rest of the dryer in heat or time measurements.

Dryer Start Switch Parts: There is a few different kind but are mostly common on all dryer models. Start switch parts allow you to push the switch and open a bi-metal mechanism and free the electricity into the dryer parts to allow it to run. The switch sometimes gets stuck in the open position or gets stuck in the closed position.

Dryer belt Parts: There is only three different belts in this brand of dryers. The most common one to replace most is belt number 341241. The belt allows the drum to spin by getting the horse power from the motor and puts tension on the Idler Pulley. Usually is torn, ripped, busted or weathered.

Dryer Motor Parts: There is only two different kinds of motors one is a front mount which means the blower is facing the front, and the other motor is the rear mount which means the blower wheel is facing the back. These motors spins the drum, tumbling your clothes at a variable rate of speed. It is common for these motors to get hung up or go bad on the start/run winding.

Dryer Blower Wheel Parts: There is only two part numbers for these blower wheel parts to match the dryer motor. The blower wheel spins at the rate of the motor circulating the air to evenly dry your clothes. It is common for these to chip and break from debris in left in pockets of clothes, or get stripped on the motor shaft.

Dryer Idler Assembly Parts: Two types of idler pulleys but either or can be put on and still work. The idler puts tension on the belt allowing the belt to turn the drum. The idler is common to get burnt by the belt wear or hung up. Also the idler can be going bad and make alot of chirping noise due to poor maintenance.

Dryer Roller Assembly Parts. Rollers come in two different types and must match up the part number. The rollers have a dimension difference and makes the drum sit differently. Dryer rollers make the drum move easier and provide support for easy tumbling. The rollers usually go bad by rounding out the bearing in the middle of the roller parts.

Dryer Thermostats, Safety switch Parts: There is many different temperatures and air flow ratios to match the thermostats and safety switches. The thermostats regulate the heat and cycle the heat temperatures. The safety's monitor and control if the dryer is getting too hot or not enough air flow and will shut down the dryer down in till replaced. When they shut the dryer down there is another problem else where that have to be diagnosed and repaired or you will experience the problem again.

That would finish up the mechanical and electrical parts and there functionality and how they break down or have a malfunction. This article excludes the heating sources so we have made another article about Whirlpool Dryer Heating Sources. What we mean is there is two different types as in I.E gas dryers or electric dryers.

Wall Framing 2 x 4 Spacing Tips

Remodeling and building homes over the years I have seen all sorts of stud spacing measurements in bearing and non-bearing walls.

How far should we space a framing stud in a bearing wall?

Most plans will give you this information. If you have a structural shear wall the plans will tell you what size of lumber to use at the plywood breaks. The normal spacing on a bearing wall will be 16 inches on center unless otherwise noted on the building plans. This is the most common spacing for studs in a wall.

How far can we space framing studs in a nonbearing wall?

I have seen studs spaced as far as 24 inches on center in a nonbearing wall. Over the years looking at the building code books I have found this to be acceptable for most framing applications. Do not confuse a nonbearing walls with a structural shear walls because there is no weight sitting on the shear wall.

Interior structural shear walls will require 16 inch on center spacing or less depending on the structural engineer and your local building department.

What are the disadvantages of spacing the studs 24 inches on center?

Using half-inch drywall with 24 inch on center stud spacing can give the wall a week or spongy feel. I have been in houses that have 24 inch on center's stud spacing and can actually push the wall and see it move. Using 5/8 drywall will solve this problem in your walls.

What are the advantages of spacing the studs 24 inches on center?

The only advantage in spacing the studs farther apart is the fact you will be able to save a few dollars on the overall cost of building or remodeling your house. I personally do not recommend this process because the savings is miniscule compared to the overall cost of building the entire house.

If you look on a measuring tape between 19 and 20 inches you will usually find a little diamond. This little diamond is another measurement for laying out eight-foot walls or floors. So instead of using 16 inch on center layout you can use 19 1/4 for stud spacing. This will save you an additional stud in your wall or floor joist every 8 feet.

I have been writing more articles on home construction problems trying to help contractors and homeowners build safer stronger houses.

Brick Stains - Mold (Darkening Of The Masonry)

I'll bet most people will never notice if they have mold in their masonry wall system of their home until it is too late. Why? Well the effect is so gradual and occurs over such a long period of time, that most people will never notice the change occurring.

However to the trained professional this problem is usually obvious and can cause damage to your masonry walls which lead to un-necessary repairs. If you can identify this problem before it causes damage to your wall system, you may save yourself some hard earned cash!

This is how to identify if there is mold in the masonry walls of your home and what to do about it.

Stand back from the wall in question maybe 50' to 75'. Now very casually begins to scan the wall. Do not focus on any given area but just look at the entire wall. You will notice the over all tonal quality to your masonry, in terms of light and color. Every wall is different depending on its location, whether it faces the prevailing winds or not and if the wall gets plenty of sunshine, so you must look at each wall individually.

Ok. Now that you have the over all color tone in your mind eye let's take a little closer look. Notice the top portion of the wall in particular or where adjoining walls meet this wall. What you are looking for is a gradual darkening of the wall from the top down usually. It may not be obvious so you want to look for darker areas within the tonal range of the wall. If you identify an area that has this darkening effect, then step a little closer for a good visual and to see if you can figure out why that area is darker.

You will notice that directly above the darker portion of the wall will be a shed point of water, such as a termination point for an adjoining wall, roof, masonry or flashing materials. You have to look close and use your 'inspector' glasses because sometimes it may not be obvious. One thing is for sure. The wall would not be darker if there was no mold present.

Remember that mold spores are always present in the air that we breathe. When these spores find damp locations they settle in and begin to multiply. They will not grow without water present. As rain water absorbs into a wall over a period of time then conditions become ripe for a mold bloom.

That is your key to knowing that excessive water is entering into your wall system. Once you have identified the mold areas and the probable cause of the water infiltration then it's a simple matter to fix the problem.

Many different repairs could be required depending on the cause, the location and the severity of the problem. Generally it will be flashing, a simple pointing of missing mortar joints, replacing a chimney crown or rebuilding portion of a damaged area.

As you can see there is no 'one fix' for any given mold problem. If the problem seems larger than you want to tackle then contact your local masonry repair expert for his advice, on how to prevent mold build up in your masonry walls.

Custom House Plans - Finding a Good Designer

The field of drawing custom house plans is a crowded and competitive one. There are many architectural and design firms out there vying for a "piece of the pie." However, if you look closely at examples of their finished product, you will find huge differences among them. The better ones offer quality designs and highly detailed plans.

Drawing a good set of custom home plans involves integrating many different concepts and ideas into a solid and usable working plan. Many designers are able to come up with a unique or interesting preliminary design, but fail to deliver when its time to detail the house structure. They draw a pretty picture but have little or no understanding of how to translate that nice design into a working plan which the builder can understand.

Having been in the business for more than 30 years, we have seen a large number of house plans which looked good at first glance. However, upon closer examination, many of these plans were found to be lacking large amounts of needed information. If a house plan is not easy to navigate or is not thoroughly detailed, then the builder is left to guess at the designer's intentions. This often means that he will "pad" his bid to make sure that he covers any unknown construction costs that may arise.

One item to look for when evaluating a house plans' quality level is the number of structural sections which are shown on the plan. Highly detailed sets of plans will always cut lots of sectional views through the house to show every different roof framing situation. This might mean that 10 or 12 (or even more) sections need to be drawn for a large house plan. And even a small house plan should include 3 or 4 sections minimum. However, many home plans available today (especially plans purchased through inexpensive plan directories) cut corners in this department and only show one or two house section views. This means that the builder will have to guess at the rest of the house framing.

Another item which is often missing or lacking in a set of house plans is comprehensive and accurate dimensions. We have always strived to provide more than the minimum amount of house dimensions so that it is easy for the owner and builder to layout a home on its building site. We will even calculate point to point dimensions (using trigonometry) for homes which have lots of odd angles to them (as opposed to a simple rectangle layout). Not all architects or designers will go this "extra mile," so it pays to check these things out beforehand.

Every set of custom house plans includes several items which need to be blown up and detailed for further clarification. If a set of plans does not provide additional close-up drawings (for things such as beam connections, deck railings, stairway construction, etc.), then it is not a complete set. It is very easy to cut corners during the planning process. But the end result will be higher costs for the home owner - and lots of frustration for the building contractor.

There are some architects and designers who seem to think that its the responsibility of the building department to check and catch any omissions. But the best of the breed takes it as a matter of pride to produce the very best plan and design they can. It is the only way to build up a loyal clientele and to get referrals for future work. And that vote of confidence from former clients makes all the difference in the world.

Winter Window Condensation Problems

If you live in a cold part of the country you are familiar with condensation and ice forming on the inside of windows. This problem is becoming more prevalent with new home construction due in part to the increased insulation and "tightness" of the houses. As the temperatures continue to drop outside I receive lots of inquiries about window condensation.

Condensation and ice form on windows because the window surface is below the dew point for the air near the window, so some of the moisture in the air condenses on the glass. The higher the relative humidity of the air near the window, the higher the temperature of the dew point. Basically there are two ways to prevent this from happening. The first is to reduce the relative humidity in the house and the second is to increase the temperature of the window glass.

Reducing the relative humidity is the most effective way of reducing window condensation. Make sure that exhaust fans are vented properly and in good working condition. Bathrooms, dryer vents and kitchen vents are the biggest culprits for introducing increased humidity inside the home. Proper venting is crucial because today's homes have been insulated so well that there is no way for the additional moisture to escape. To be effective the relative humidity must be dropped to a minimum of 40%.

Increasing the temperature of the window is a bit more challenging. For starters make sure window curtains and blinds are opened during the day to let in sun and also to allow air movement to help dry things out. By opening curtains and blinds you're also allowing the warmer air from the room to warm up the window.

If you take these steps and have good quality windows the condensation and ice should go away. For additional information contact the manufacturer of your windows or check with your local building supply company.

Home Selling Tips - Best Real Estate Advice Ever

One of the most important things to remember when selling your home is to keep it as clean as possible. If you need help or don't have the time to organize your stuff, you can hire a home staging professional in your area. Ask your real estate professional for more information.

1. Remove any clutter from the home and place it in storage. Do not store this stuff on the property if you don't have enough room. Storing clutter in closets or in your garage, will often make these areas look smaller. By removing clutter or even large pieces of furniture, the rooms will look larger.

2. Disconnect yourself emotionally from your home. This is a big problem for people who have lived in their house for long periods of time. If you've raised a family here, the children could have emotional ties also to the home. Some home sellers are looking for someone special to buy their home, if you've got the time and money to wait, you can be selective but be careful, because the longer you wait, the market could go up or down.

3. When your real estate professional is showing the house, it's always a good idea to leave the home until the potential homebuyers are gone. One example of this would be if you were in a bad mood or didn't have a good day and were a little upset at the world. Your mood could cause potential homebuyers to lose interest in the property. I've seen this more than once.

4. Make sure everything is operating properly. This would include doors, door knobs, windows, kitchen appliances, garage door openers, cabinet drawers, bathroom fixtures, toilets, faucets, lights, switches, electrical outlets and anything else that moves, slides, turns or rotates that is part of the home.

5. The Interior and exterior walls of the home should be in good shape. Make sure there's no termite damage, wood rot, peeling paint, broken windows or holes in the walls.

6. Make sure the flooring is in good shape. Some real estate professionals will suggest, replacing the carpeting with a neutral color. This method often works pretty good but I have seen plenty of homes that were re-carpeted and after the home was purchased the carpeting was replaced again, by the new owners. Just make sure the flooring is in good shape.

7. Here's a trick that definitely works a little magic when selling a home. Leave some cookies or a nice fruit bowl on the dining room table. There is no need to leave a sign that says "Eat Me". It gives the home a warm feeling, almost like a country atmosphere.

8. Even better than home selling tip number seven would be baking some cookies just before the perspective buyers arrive, it's not the cookies, it's the smell from the cookies that most people cannot resist.

These are just a few home selling tips but the most important is to keep the inside and outside of the home clean.

Forklift Inspection

Having been in the equipment sales business for nearly 30 years, I get asked a few questions on a consistent basis.

Most frequently I'm asked, "How do I know if I'm getting a quality piece of equipment?

Or "What should I be looking for when I buy that used iron?"

Well of course that depends on what you are looking for. There are different inspections that need to be done for different categories of equipment. And because there are so many types of equipment being manufactured today there isn't enough time to cover every one of them, at least not in one article.

What I will do though is address a different piece every month and hopefully that will answer the majority of your questions as we go through-out the rest of the year.

Of course if you have a specific question you can always call or e-mail me and if I don't know the answer, I can find the answer for you in short order.

This month let's start with Forklifts;

The most common type is the Industrial straight mast forklift. For the sake of space we'll concentrate on a 5,000 lbs capacity machine. But this really could apply to any standard straight mast machine.

Let's go right to the heart of any piece of equipment, the engine.

Check the oil level, and when you have the dip stick out of the engine, run the oil over your fingers, see if you feel any dirt or grit in the oil itself. Check the color. If it has a milky or watery look to it, you may have cooling system problems. How is the thickness of the oil? Is it fresh or has it lost its viscosity? Then finally smell it. Does it smell burnt or just smell like oil? This isn't as through as having an oil sample run, but as a quick inspection, it can tell you if the machine has been serviced lately.

Next let's take a look at the machines physical structure.

Inspect the mast. Look inside the channel where the different stages ride up and down.

Are there any shiny or worn spots? Any metal shavings present? Start the machine up. Does the mast move up and down smoothly or does it bind up? Does it chatter on the way down? Binding could mean a structural problem possibly even a bent mast or carriage assembly. Check out the hoses. Is there any excessive wear, cracked covering or leaks? Then inspect the lift cylinders and tilt cylinders. Look for pitting, scrapes or missing chrome on the rods themselves. This will eventually cause leaks. And of course check for obvious leaks. If the machine is equipped with a side shift operate that and check for all of the above on that cylinder as well.

Check the area where the mast connects to the forklift. Is it free of cracks and look well lubricated. Check out any pins and or bushings. Same thing, free of cracks and well lubricated? Check the carriage out itself. Is it bent? Does it have a back rest? And are the fasteners tight. Inspect the areas where the forks are attached. Does it look in good condition? Finally check the forks themselves. Are they straight? If they have holes cut in them, (for a trailer ball hitch) remember that may have changed the temper of the metal on the forks and cause them to be weaker.

Continue on with the structure inspecting the machines ROPs (roll over protection) to make sure it hasn't had something dropped on it or been flipped over on its side. Any damage here could cause you liability down the road if someone were to be injured due to a damaged ROPs.

Look at the back end of the machine to see if you can check the condition of the steer axle and steer cylinder. Check for leaks and any major play in the steering assembly, ball joints and axles.

Now it's time to operate the lift. Make sure the seat belt is in good condition and USE IT.

Start the machine again and check for the transmission operation. Forward and reverse. The machine should move smoothly without major delays or transmission slippage. Does it have an inching pedal? And does it operate correctly. Check the brakes. Also check the steering. Is it smooth without excessive play? There shouldn't be any offensive noises coming from the machine during these tests.

Operate all functions again on the forks, Lift up down, tilt forward and back and side shift side to side (if equipped). Some hydraulic sounds will be heard but it shouldn't be a growl or a scream.

There is nothing better than checking out a machine first hand to tell you if it's a good unit or if it's one that should be avoided at any price.

Remember:

You always get what you expect, when you take the time to inspect.

If these terms I've used are foreign to you, it might help to have your mechanic go with you to look at the machine. Or as always, you can call me if you need help with a machine.

Teak Tables - To Ride Out Flooding

When you are considering what type of furniture to purchase for your home, what comes to mind? For many people the typical thoughts relate to color, shape and style, so they know something will fit into their home.

But what about a piece's ability to live up to Mother Nature's wrath? Sure, you think about this for patio furniture but what about other pieces of furniture in your home?

You may have noticed that Mother Nature has not been very friendly this year. In fact, she has been downright angry it seems. There have been natural disasters all over the country with some of the worst relating to flooding. Imagine if the flood waters came up and into your home. How would your furniture fare through it?

This is one thing that people with teak tables and furniture don't have to worry about.

You may think that teak tables are really meant to be patio furniture. While they can indeed be pieces that do well on the patio, they also are the kinds of pieces that hold up and are able to be recovered if the water that is supposed to stay outside manages to get into a house.

Teak wood is naturally water resistant. That means teak tables are going to be water resistant as well. Unlike other woods, teak wood is packed tightly with natural oils. These oils don't go away just because a teak tree has been cut down. Instead they are so thick and plentiful that they keep working in the wood for years. It's the oil that is going to save the teak tables when the flood water comes.

When flood waters come to a regular wood table, they find miniature holes, cracks and gaps that have been made as the wood has dried out since the tree was killed to make the furniture piece. The water gets inside and seeps into the wood causing it to swell and expand. This can lead to more cracking or a warping of the wood. Eventually, when the water goes away, the wood may be able to be dried out, but permanent damage has already been done to change the look and constitution of the piece.

Teak tables on the other hand don't really care that the flood waters have arrived. If you have ever tried to wash your hands when you have oil or grease on them, you will realize that the water can't get to your skin. It forms beads on top of the surface of your skin and just sits there until it falls off. Teak tables operate in much the same manner. There is so much of the natural oil in the wood that the water pools on the outside, but can't break in to damage the wood. Eventually, the flood waters subside and your teak tables are none the worse for the wear.

The only thing you will have to do is clean off any grime and dirt that was brought in, as well as any bacteria or parasites that may have been in the dirty water, and your teak tables are ready to go back to work.

Beautiful Bathroom Vanity Cabinets to Invigorate Your Bathroom Design

With so many different styles of bathroom vanity cabinets many people feel as though they may be getting in a little bit over their heads. The thing is though having new cabinets in your bathroom will not only give the room a brand new feeling but it will also give storage space that is probably greatly needed. The right cabinets can do a lot for organizing or storing the items and supplies that you would not regularly want out in the open. This makes such purchases a must when you are remodeling the bathroom. By considering just what you will be storing is a great way to make sure that you are getting exactly what you need. You want to make sure that you end up with plenty of room. A beautiful cabinet without enough storage is simply not going to work in the long run. So make sure that you are thinking not just about style but about function as well.

Just because you may be short on space does not mean that you have to skip out on the bathroom cabinet all together. What it means though is that you are going to have to make sure that you are being a little more cautious with your space. There is a wide range of small bathroom vanity cabinets to pick from. No longer are the bathroom cabinets nothing more than a white box. High quality wood and amazing details and designs are now much easier to come by. Carefully shopping for cabinets is a way to combine function with style. Select a more plain looking cabinet or check out the more detailed and extravagant models and styles that are out there. Without a doubt there is going to be something out there that matches your exact needs and taste in cabinetry.

Even though there is a wide range of styles to pick from when it comes time to do the shopping, all of the styles of cabinets basically break down into two main groups. The American style bathroom vanity cabinets and the European style bathroom vanities are what you will basically be choosing from. If you are really into making sure that you are getting the most for your money then you will want to take a look at custom made pieces. You can have bathroom cabinets made as large or as small as you need. This is especially helpful for those who are working with spaces that are not very typical in bathrooms. If you have an exceptionally large or small bathroom, or even an odd shaped one, this is the best way to go.

By bringing your own thoughts and design ideas into play you will be able to make sure that you are getting the best use out of the space that you are trying to fill. Staying organized is the ultimate goal so by making the cabinet design yourself you will be able to make sure that you are getting exactly what you want and what you need. It is also a great way to make sure that you have something that is at the very least slightly different then what everyone else has. Everyone likes having pieces or structures in their home that is slightly different then what everyone has in their homes. This is for the "wow factor". People enjoy having others envy their home and there is no better way to make sure that it happens other then custom designing your pieces.

So whether you are looking to improve the resale value of your home, add more functionality to it, or to make those around you envious, make sure that you are putting enough time into your shopping experience. Make sure that you are ending up with exactly what you want and do not settle for anything less. Since this is probably the last time you will replace the bathroom cabinets, at least for a long time, you want to make sure that you end up with the right cabinets. Bathroom vanity cabinets that work for your family needs now and for your future needs is what you will want to end up with. By taking everything into consideration you will be sure to make sure that you are making a wise investment. If you are completely unsure whether or not you have what it takes to select the right bathroom cabinets for your home then consult a professional decorator. It is extremely important to make sure that you get what you need so do not waste any time or money.

Are Indoor Humidity Levels Affecting Your Health?

The ideal indoor humidity level is either 35% to 45% or 40% to 50% depending on who you ask. Thankfully, the human body is quite flexible and you do not have too aim at an exact figure. The important thing is to avoid extremes. Living indoors is not entirely natural. The artificial environments that we create for ourselves can sometimes cause extremes of humidity to occur. For short periods of time this is nothing to worry about, but the long term effects can be quite unpleasant.

If the humidity level regularly exceeds 50% you are likely to experience a rapidly increasing dust mite population, which will affect allergy sufferers. Permanently damp rooms tend to have a musty smell. The damp air is a perfect breeding ground for mold, mildew and fungus, which can cause serious health problems. Where ever possible the cause of such conditions should be removed, but it is not always that simple and a dehumidifier may be required. A modern dehumidifier with built in humidistat can be programmed to maintain a humidity level below 50%. There are a wide variety available, so it is important to find the correct type for your situation. A useful guide to dehumidifiers can be found at DehumidifierTips.com

Consistently low humidity levels are also bad. This tends to occur when the weather is cold outside and we turn up the heat in our homes. The most noticeable effects are a sore throat and sinus pain, symptoms that are common in modern society at certain times of year. You can also get dry skin and itchy eyes. The solution is to buy a humidifier that will put moisture back into the air. Like dehumidifiers, these can be programmed to operate automatically, and there is a huge range available that make the most of a variety of different humidification techniques. These techniques are explored in detail at HumidifierInformation.com together with everything else you need to know on the subject.

If any of these symptoms sound familiar, maybe you should buy a hygrometer (humidity meter) and take some readings to find out if humidity is the cause. With modern technology at your disposal there is no need for your health to suffer.

You can find out more about optimum indoor humidity levels at http://www.humidifierinformation.com

Why Ozone Use is a Must When Properly Treating a Mold Problem in a Home Or Building

Have You Been Told You Can Complete a Thorough Mold Remediation Project Without Using a High Level Ozone Shock Treatment?

Think Again!! Says Nations Top Mold Remediation Expert, Quoting a Military Report Issued By Scientists at Los Alamos National Laboratory Which Proves Its Practically Impossible

Did You Know That Anthrax Reproduces With Toxic Spores Just Like Toxic Mold?

I Discovered That The US Military Has Studied How to De-Con a Civilian Building Which Has Been Contaminated by a Spore Based Pathogen Like Mold. The Studies Were Conducted After the Anthrax Attacks on Congressmen Using the US Post Office. Their Discoveries Throw Conventional Mold Treatment Out the Window!

Ozone Myths Shattered!

Often I am asked about the effectiveness of Ozone treatments for mold remediation. This is a complex topic, which has many sides.
If you ask me is ozone effective for mold remediation I would honestly answer, that it depends...

On what you ask? Well on many, many, things I answer.

You see there are some contractors out there that are using powerful ozone generators as a substitute for the actual physical steps of mold remediation. I have heard claims like:

"Our ozone machines are so powerful they will turn mold to ash."

"They will literally vaporize mold."

"Leave the dry wall and the ozone cannons will destroy the mold which you can paint right over"

And Dozens of other lies.

The truth is the use of ozone alone is never a complete treatment for mold.

The roots of mold will penetrate deep within a substrate up to 3/16ths to .5 inch.

Additionally even dead mold is still poisonous. So removing physically all of the structures of the mold organism is necessary. Just using a gas-out alone, will never accomplish this objective.

Molds reproduce by making spores that cannot be seen without magnification. Mold spores waft through the indoor and outdoor air continually. When mold spores land on a damp spot indoors, they begin growing and multiplying, and soon the mold problem is out of control. Many types of molds exist. ALL MOLDS have the potential to cause health effects.

Ozone Kills Mold!

Ozone is a powerful gas and it will destroy mold spores and the mVOCs created by toxic bacterial or fungal organisms.

In fact according to a study conducted at Los Alamos National Laboratory (that's where they developed the atomic bomb) scientists discovered, that in order to truly complete the decontamination of a home school or commercial building that has been contaminated with a spore based pathogen, like mold it is absolutely vital to complete your decontamination process with the use of a gas-out that would flood the area with toxic levels of a reactive gas.

The reason given is that a building has so many nooks crannies crevices and cul- de-sacs; it has so many surfaces that interface between boards and in ducts and others inaccessible spaces where spore can hide and remain eluded by liquid based disinfectants. That's right no amount of HEPA vacuuming or air-scrubbing or manual clean up can ever achieve complete true de-con without a gas out due inaccessibility.

But a gas can over come this because at high levels the gas can penetrate right into all the nooks and crannies and even into carpets and fabrics and other porous materials.

While many gases were considered the winner was ozone hands down!

The reason is simple ozone is lethal to virtually all pathogens- yet it is made of O3 which is pure oxygen O2 %2B O a single free-radical oxygen molecule. The single oxygen can only last for a split second when it bonds with and adheres to other molecules. With viruses mold and bacteria it punches a hole directly into the cell wall and then begins to destroy the contents. A tremendous amount of ozone is required for serious remediation.

If a high parts per million concentration of ozone is not reached within a given area, all the bacteria will not be killed. Mold will then grow once again from any remaining live spores, and strong odors may return. That is why we use Bio3 Blaster commercial grade powerful industrial strength ozone air generators. They are chosen by only the best professionals for serious mold, mildew, odor and pollutant removals in homes, offices, motel rooms, clubs, pubs, basements, cars, boats, as well as for fire, flood and crime scene cleanup restorations.

What is then left behind is pure oxygen O2... Safe and healthy.

The only way for this process to be effective is to isolate an area and then to use powerful ozone generators known as cannons to generate ozone at very high levels to completely saturate the air in the isolated area.

The Way its Done is With an OZONE CANNON!

No people plants animals or fish can be present when this is done.
Each room of the house can be blasted with an Ozone Treatment to sterilize them of mold.

High powered ozone travels and kills mold and bacteria all through the room.

This process is known as High Ozone Shock Treatment.

It is not a substitute for mold remediation. If there is mold growing on sheet rock for instance ozone is not an answer. Mold will grow completely through sheet rock once the hyphal root penetrates the paper of the drywall it quickly permeates the gypsum as it is made of calcium carbonate a mineral rich food source for mold. The mold almost always penetrates the paper behind the wall too! If mold is growing in an attic, ozone alone is not an answer. For the same reasons the roots of the mold penetrate the boards to deeply for ozone alone to completely destroy the problem.

What ozone is great for is to get into the areas where the human or fogger or HEPA vac can't and to destroy the spores that were missed.
As humans, trained mold workers lack eyes good enough to see the mold they are combating once it goes airborne. You see ten thousand spores can fit onto the head of a pin.

They are that small!!!

In one square inch of flowering mold there can be anywhere from 1-5 million!!! What's worse is that when a mold worker begins to fog or spray the mold- the mold, has a built in survival mechanism called bursting or sporulation which allows it to send clouds of invisible spores into the air to escape the chemicals being sprayed onto them. This means that in a typical mold remediation job, millions and billions of spores are put into the air and are too tiny to see.
By saturating the area that the treatment has been performed in after the mold has been killed and treated only is one is assured of complete decontamination.

If you can stand to be in a room with an ozone machine it does NOT have the power to kill mold and bacteria. You can ONLY kill mold by the use of unoccupied room High Ozone Shock Treatments.Mold can ONLYbe killed by ozone levels much higher than meant for human occupation like our machines can produce.

This step should only be performed, after the gross removal of the porous building materials like drywall, after the stains have been removed and after the surfaces have been fogged and or vacuumed.

Ozone will also permanently destroy the mVOC's and musty odors.

Ozone oxidizes poisonous materials rapidly; sterilization ability is 600--3000 times stronger than Chlorine. Ozone kills E-coli 3125 times faster than chlorine. Some swimming pools/spas use ozone because it is a strong disinfectant, but it converts back into oxygen so it does not have harmful effects like chlorine. The proof of the efficacy of Ozone Shock therapy can be found in a study published in the Journal of the International ozone Association.

Many mold remediation companies use zero or no sporicidal products (things that kill spore or mold "seeds") to perform a mold remediation process. That means They always leave behind spore-contaminated structures.

Killing the spores is the most important part of a mold remediation process!!!!

Leaving the spores behind is like planting future mold problems which will inevitably develop or germinate later.

Safe Mold Solutions recommends no less than two sporicides (things that destroy spores) be used.

We have found the use of both Ozone and hydrogen peroxide to be ideal.

Both ozone and hydrogen peroxide work nearly identically. Both use free radical oxygen to destroy mold viruses bacteria and spores. Hydrogen peroxide leaves behind water, ozone leaves behind only pure oxygen.

No Residues... Safe and Effective!!!!!

What does all this mean?

If you have allergies to bacteria and mold or are suffering from contamination you can only sanitize, and truly destroy, these contaminants buy the use of an unoccupied room high Ozone Shock Treatment. Once you have shocked the unoccupied room or area you can then return an hour after the machine is turned off to breathe and sleep better in the room that has been sanitized. NO air purifier or chemical can do that for you!!!

We recommend the use of the machines that only Elite professionals use to kill mold spores in high humidity and flooding situations. The use of high powered ozone shock treatments is the ONLY way to reach hard to get to areas to kill mold spores.

If a competitor offers you a mold clean up protocol without Ozone Shock Treament- kick him out of your home!!! He obviously doesn't understand mold or its' complete and thorough clean up!

Team Building Events Help Put the "I" Back in Team

Show me a person who says there is no "I" in team and I'll show you a person who has never been a part of a productive, close-knit, supportive team: odds are it's the same person.

"THERE IS NO I IN TEAM"...

For years (don't ask how many) people having been throwing this phrase around in an effort to build team morale and create a sense of oneness. Now that's kind of funny. Creating a sense of oneness without putting any of "you" into the team. How does that Work? Well it doesn't. And I think employers are finally starting to figure that out. A team is essentially like a puzzle. All of the pieces come together and create this whole image. But the image wouldn't be complete without each of the individual pieces. This is the way that a team should operate. Each individual needs to feel as though they have an important piece of the puzzle and without them the image will never be complete. This is where team building events come into play. Sure you can throw a bunch of people on a project and call them a team. In fact, one dictionary defines a team as "a number of persons associated together in work or activity". A team is much more than that.

Teambuilding events help to create camaraderie amongst team members: Bringing these team members together to learn more about each other and the business that they are a part of. Team building is necessary for increased retention, necessary to create a peaceful and harmonious working environment and necessary for the delivery of a great end product. A teambuilding event can be as short as a few hours or as long as an entire weekend. The length depends on the overall goals of the team and what they hope to accomplish in a set time period. Many people leave these events with a new outlook on themselves and the organizations they represent. People often learn more about their co-workers in a few hours or days than in ten years working with them. The difference is apparent right away. People have more knowledge of each other and more knowledge of the company. They have spent time discussing non-work things and have more to offer each other and the group. Relationships have been formed and a bond has been built. These are the teams that last. These are the teams that work well together and these are the teams everyone wishes they were a part of.

OK, let's face it, there is no "I" in team literally but when you're speaking in terms of what each individual brings to the team then there had better be a place for an "I" in team. Members of any team want to feel and know that all of their blood, sweat, and tears (sometimes literally) are significant and not unfounded.
The "I" in team represents:

What I do is important to the success of this team.

The quality of the work that I produce will effect my team's reputation.

Decisions that I make affect my entire team.

What I do for this team matters.

I have a voice on this team and people hear me.

Planning Your Bathroom Remodel Budget - Home Improvement Ideas

As a bathroom remodeling contractor, I get calls from people, that have no idea what they want or how much anything is going to cost. Here's some simple tips that can be very helpful when planning a bathroom remodel budget.

Bathroom Remodeling Investment

In 2008, the average mid-range bathroom cost around $16,000 and you could recoup around $12,000 of your original investment upon the sale of your home. According to a popular remodeling magazine, larger bathrooms using expensive fixtures, tile, bathtubs, woodworking, toilets and showers had an average of $52,000. Upon the sale of a home, you could recoup around $36,000 of your original investment.

Finding out How Much Things Cost

My first suggestion, would be to visit your local home improvement center, lumber yard or plumbing supply warehouse. Larger stores like Home Depot and Lowe's, seemed to provide you with value pricing but don't have a large selection. While doing some research on the Internet I noticed that some of their pricing is outrageously, outrageous. Some plumbing supply warehouses can provide value but beware others won't.

Create a List of Bathroom Remodeling Parts

You can get a good idea of your bathroom remodel costs for your budget by making a list of bathroom parts with pricing and then adding them up for a grand total. If you're a total bathroom remodel budget is $15,000 and you have a $6,000 bathtub with $4000 worth of tile, you could have a budget problem.

Figuring out the Labor

You will have to contact a contractor to get an actual cost for the labor. Sometimes you can double the cost of your bathroom remodeling parts to get a rough idea. If you have a list or a couple of lists and a few pictures of some sample bathrooms, this will make the contractor's job easier and often they can give you a labor price within a few days.

Give Yourself a Cushion

I would suggest leaving yourself a small financial cushion for any additional remodeling items. For example, you could see a different toilet, or instead of painting the walls, you now choose to wallpaper, you could incur additional expenses that you haven't planned for. If you know exactly what you want and stick to the original bathroom remodeling plan, you shouldn't need the cushion.

Financial problems often transfer into construction problems, so spend some time figuring out, how much money you want to spend on the bathroom remodel and try not to go overboard on the budget. I hate to see homeowners struggling with home improvement loan payments. Try to create a bathroom remodeling budget that is realistic and will not create a financial burden upon you or your family.

Home Renovations Go Better With Planning

Many people are choosing to improve their own homes rather than selling them. Improving your home's exterior, for example, can improve your home's value and actually be a fun home renovation project.

There are many ways to improve a home's exterior. New gutters, window trims, and siding are all seemingly small details, but they can dramatically change your home's appearance. Other people add patios, shrubbery or other landscaping details. Some people even add brick pavers, gazebos and other touches.

Most people can do any of these exterior projects if they keep some factors in mind. The most important of these is planning. Before you start any project, plan out exactly what you want to do. Figure out how much it will cost and how long it will take. Do you have the right tools and supplies? Do you know how to use them? Do you need to rent the equipment? Does the rental company have it available on the days you need it? What about when the project is done? What maintenance will have to be performed. That new gazebo may look pretty now, but will you have time to repaint or restain it to keep it looking nice next year?

Even if you are just painting the exterior trim, be sure you have planned to follow all the necessary preparatory steps, such as cleaning and sanding the surface to be painted. Even though the home improvement shows depict their teams going in and accomplishing several jobs at once, don't be tempted to follow suit. Their professionals, you're not.

If you don't have the answers to any of your plannig questions, get the answers before you start. There is no shortage of help. Home improvement stores, building contractors, the internet and even local community colleges all can be fonts of information for you. They may have tips that you never even considered that can help you save time and money or make your work more professional looking.

When planning out your project, be sure to plan enough time so you can go one section, one step at a time. Don't proceed to the next step until you are done with the current one. If you have a limited amount of ladders, plan things out so you do one side of the building at a time, so you don't have to move the ladder back and forth, wasting time in the process.

Also, try to have a backup plan. If you plan to paint a certain day, what if it rains? Is there a part of the project you could do instead?

As with any other project, home renovation goes best with planning and practice. Once you've accomplished some small projects, you will have the confidence to tackle bigger ones. Your home will soon look even better and you will be proud of what you've accomplished.

Tips on the Best Way to Fix Dripping Faucet

Drip, drip, drip. Now, wait a minute. Where have we heard that one before? Doesn't take you too long to figure out that it's in your very own luxuriously styled bathroom. It's such a pity that while we don't hesitate to lend copious doses of our prodigious talent to the installation of the bathroom flooring or the kitchen backsplash, we face a complete drought of ideas while trying to fix dripping faucet.

It's Such A Tenuous Contention

It's so easy to become utterly tone-deaf to the plaintive wail of the leaking faucet. I'm also bemused at the alacrity with which homeowners fall prey to the guiles of plumbing professionals despite their hefty price.

It's important to understand that a leaky faucet is a tenuous contention that does not require the competence or the expertise of a plumber. With a few tools like a screwdriver and an adjustable wrench, you can work wonders in about $3.

What? Fix that irritating faucet in just $3? Sounds too good to be true right? But guess what; it is not as blatantly absurd as it sounds.

It's Time To Get Cracking

In all probability, the run-down state of the inner parts of the faucet may be the root cause of your consternation. So here's how you can put an end to those sleepless nights forever:

  • It's very important to identify the brand of faucet fitted in your bathroom or kitchen. Each brand will have different kinds of parts, namely the spring and the rubber cap.
  • Make a visit to the local hardware store and pick up new rubber parts and springs. Make sure they match the size of the old ones.
  • Turn off the water at the shut-off valve housed under the sink, close to the place where the water hose comes out from the wall. Make sure both the hot and cold water valves are turned off.
  • Using a flat-head screwdriver, remove the protective cap that lies on the top of the faucet handle. Next to go is the screw, and the top knob is off.
  • Get hold of an adjustable wrench, and use it to unscrew the nut that lies at the base of the faucet handle. With the nut cracked, you need to replace the old and possibly worn out spring and rubber cap.
  • Just hope you've paid attention to the way the faucet's been assembled or else you sure to be in a soup while putting all the parts back in place.

The moment of truth has finally arrived. Turn on the water and you are sure to feel a sudden gush of self worth.
